Creating Board Games

Ask a child why they like to play board games and they will say because it's fun. Ask a parent why they like their kids to play board games and you will probably hear a very different answer.

Board games are a wonderful way to teach your children so many life lessons, such as:

  • Taking turns;
  • Following directions;
  • Strategic thinking;
  • Teamwork (if the game is played in teams); and
  • How to be gracious as both a winner and a loser.

The best part is that they don't even realize that they are learning these lessons. They just think they are having fun and playing a game.

As a parent, you should join in the fun. It is easier to teach these lessons to your children when you are actually playing the game with them. Not to mention that it is a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your kids.

Start while your kids are young. Candy Land is a great first board game for a child. The only knowledge necessary to play is color recognition. The game board is bright and colorful and the candy theme is sure to appeal to small children. It is a great introduction to the fun of board games.

There are so many different games on the market today from old classics that you played when you were a kid to new and exciting games targeted for today's generation. For example, I bet you played Memory when you were a kid, but did you play it with Thomas the Tank Engine, or Dora The Explorer pictures? Game manufacturers are really trying to appeal to kids today by keeping their themes in line with current cartoons and movies. Take a close look at the game aisle of your local toy store. You are bound to find something that your child will get excited about.

Keep your child interested by matching the games you play with their ability and level of education. When your child learns to count, start playing games that require them to count the number of spaces they move. Once they learn to read, start playing games that involve some reading. In doing so, you will triple the benefit. Not only will you be teaching them the life lessons outlined above and spending quality time with them, but you will also be helping to keep their brain sharp and give them a platform to use the skills they are learning in school.

So the next time you have a rainy day and a bored child, turn off the television, put away the video games, save your money on the movie tickets and turn that rainy day into a day of family fun with board games.
