If you stop to think about it, you'll realize there are quite a few times that you wish you could know more about someone. Maybe you're thinking of hiring someone as a nanny to look after your kids for a few hours a day. Or maybe you run a small business and are looking for someone trustworthy to join you as a partner. Or perhaps you're dating someone knew and you get the feeling they aren't being completely honest about their past.
How can you find out more about their past?
Well for starters you can go to Google and search for their name in quotes. For example, if you were looking for information on me you would search for "Jaime Randall". The quotes are important because that tells the search engine to only show results that contain that exact phrase. Without quotes you'll get results on everything from Jamie Farr to Tony Randall.
If the person you're searching for has a unique name, there's a good chance you'll find something on them. It could be a MySpace account or a personal blog they post too.
Unfortunately this method has some major flaws. First, if they have a common name the results will be overwhelming. Second, not everyone leaves a virtual "footprint" on the internet. And lastly, even if you find a blog it's unlikely to include anything they didn't want people to know about.
Instead, what you can do is run a background check on them. A background check will turn up all sorts of things like credit problems, criminal records, and driving offenses. If the guy you're dating was once arrested for beating an ex-girlfriend, wouldn't you want to know?
There are many online services that allow you to run a cheap unlimited background check on anyone. The one I recommend is Instant-Background-Checker.com. They're cheap, easy to use, and provide background results in about 2 minutes.
